Welcome to St Laurence

You might have driven along Como Lake Avenue without ever noticing the turn that brings you to us. But we are here.

St Laurence is an Anglican church community gathering every Sunday in Coquitlam for worship that has deep roots and room to breathe. Whether you know every word of the service or have never set foot in a church before, you will find a space that is easy to follow, dedicated programmes for children and youth, and a community that is genuinely glad you are here.

We are an affirming community. No matter your background, your sexuality, your gender identity, or who you love, you are safe and welcome here. We take God seriously, and we take honest doubt seriously too. After most services, a good portion of the congregation simply doesn't leave. The coffee is decent and the conversation is better.

What Makes Us Anglican

If you come from a different church background, or no background at all, our style of worship might feel different from what you have experienced, but it is easier to follow than it looks. We hold together traditions that are often kept apart:

• Thoughtful, Not Dogmatic: We preach from three texts every Sunday, following the lectionary, the ancient pattern of reading Scripture together across the whole Christian year. This means our teaching is shaped by the broad, diverse whole of Scripture, rather than a single preacher's preferences.
• A Self-Governing Canadian Voice: We belong to the Anglican Church of Canada, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. We are a self-governing Canadian church with our own voice, yet connected to a global family.
• Deeply Rooted, Spirit-Led: We baptise, we share communion, and we pray together with words that Christians have used for centuries, while remaining entirely open to the quiet leading of the Spirit today.

What Makes Us Unusual in the Tri-Cities

We hold these commitments seriously, without letting any one part crowd out the others.

We are not a social justice organisation that happens to meet on Sundays, nor a museum preserving a fading tradition, nor a therapeutic community that avoids theological substance.

We are a church that takes God seriously, takes Scripture seriously, takes doubt seriously, and takes the world seriously, and we believe those things belong together. In a region where many churches choose one of those commitments and leave the others behind, that combination is genuinely rare.

This also means we are actively reckoning with our colonial inheritance. We are on the traditional territory of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm people, and we are in an ongoing, humbling relationship with the Kwikwetlem First Nation. That relationship is shaping who we are becoming.

We do none of this perfectly. But we are on a shared journey, and we are still learning how to walk it faithfully, guided by the example of Jesus and the power of the Spirit.
